The Pan-American Championships are in full swing. Undefeated teams after three rounds include two teams from the University of Texas at Brownsville, the University of Maryland Baltimore County and the University of Texas at Dallas. 
GM Josh Friedel is in the clear lead at the North American Open. He defeated GMs Yury Shulman and Varuzhan Akobian on a way to a perfect 5-0. See games and more details in Randy Hough's update. 
This year's North American Open includes a star-studded field including GMs Loek Van Wely, Friedel, Akobian, Stocek, Kacheishvili, Kosteniuk and US Women's Champ Krush.
GM Aleksey Dreev dominated the University of Texas at Dallas Invitational, held from December 16-21. The top seed posted a fine 2806 tournament performance to take first place, a full 2 points ahead of GM Ramirez in 2nd place.
