gustilead.jpgThe Manhattan Open (August 17-21) began last night at the New Yorker hotel. The Open section features 13 GMs including Jan Gustaffson from Germany.

The very first round featured its share of upsets, with FM Aleksandr Ostrovskiy defeating GM Giorgi Kacheishvili, FM Alex Betaneli winning against GM Maurice Ashley and IM Jose Dominguez from the Dominican Republic defeating GM Tamaz Gelashvili.

Top seed GM Gustaffson is at 1.5/2 after a win over WGM Firuza Velinkhali from Azerbaijan and a draw against Kassa Korley.

CLO columnist IM Greg Shahade got off to a good start, with an interesting endgame win over WIM Iryna Zenyuk.
