From the new site, expect news on major tournaments, American stars competing internationally, exclusive puzzle galleries and annotated games. I need help with this exciting project. Feel free to send me your ideas for articles and photographs. Many chess websites provide instant crosstables and game scores, while a monthly magazine like Chess Life supplies polished prose and in depth tournaments reports. The role of Chess Life Online will be somewhere in between. We'll bring you very fast coverage, but we'll also hustle to complement reports with the best analysis, anecdotes and photographs. Check out our two web tournament reports as of launch date, Macauley Peterson's on the Las Vegas Chess Festivaland my own on the Mayor's Cup. Come back throughout the weekend for World Open coverage! I'm happy to announce that Joel Benjamin has begun a chess advice column. Mail in your own questions to askgmjoel@uschess.org.Inquire about anything from what it's like to be a pro player, how best to study openings or what you should have played in a particular position. My brother Greg Shahade has signed up to write a bi-monthly column on the rating gains and losses of our top players. His column will coincide with the release of each major rating supplement. As a lifelong sports fan, Greg believes that chess should be promoted more like a sport, and models his reports on what might appear on ESPN.com. Chess Life Online's bios of top players do more than supply the basic facts, but give insight into the personalities and chess styles of the players. The bios also include beautiful combinations and positions from key victories, so you can do some light training while browsing the bios. The bio section will expand to include every active Grandmaster in America. Notice that Chess Life Magazine is on the web now. You can play through any complete game from the magazine. There's also a web-exclusive U.S. Championship photo gallery . Some of the Chess Life Online features complement the June issue of Chess Life. For instance, there is an interview with the "other winner" from San Diego, Yury Shulman and a Ruy Lopez puzzle gallery. The Chess Life column, Key Krackers has been transferred to the web, with larger diagrams and a prize for the fastest solver! Watch for interactive features in the coming weeks, such as forums and polls. I look forward to hearing from you! xo, Jennifer |
