Maxx Coleman and Tim Moroney both earned 5.5/6 at the Under 21 section of the U.S. Junior Open (July 25-27, Lindsborg, Kansas), but Coleman took the trophy and the title on tiebreak. The two top-scorers drew in fewer than 20 moves in round three and went on to dispatch all of their other opponents. Coleman was having trouble neutralizing Duane Tate's compensation for the pawn. Tate's major error was allowing Coleman to capture a second pawn with Qxa7. Instead of R3d4 and it is difficult for White to continue his development.

Tim Moroney, who also topped the scoretable, is also a blogger. Here his opponent misses a pin when over-eagerly advancing his e-pawn, after which Moroney wins easily. The Open section was divided into Under 21, Under 15 and Under 11 sections. Garrett Wirka won clear first in the Under 15 with 5.5/6, while Joseph Stafford dominated the Under 11 section, with a perfect 6-0 score. See complete crosstables at the official website. The U.S. Junior Open was held at the Anatoly Karpov International School of Chess, which also hosted a summer camp just before the Open. GM Varuzhan was the lead instructor at the camp, and participants were treated to a pre-tourney simul by "Var" as well as top-notch game analysis.
