After a valiant comeback against Ukrainian WGM Inna Gaponenko yesterday, WGM Katerina Rohonyan lost the rapid tiebreaks 1.5-0.5, and was knocked out of the Women's World Championship in Nalchik, Russia. Yesterday Katerina said that just beating elite woman player Natalya Zhukova made the trip worthwhile, and indeed, Katerina's strong showing bodes well for the U.S. Women's Olympic team , in which Katerina will play for the first time.





Goran Urosevic reports for CLO/chessdom that in a press conference after the game, Gaponenko was asked why she had such a tough time against a player with a 2321 rating. Gaponenko responded, "2321 is an excellent rating for a woman. Katerina is very talented, she lived in Ukraine and I remember that she was very active in the tournaments. Now she has a job in the US and perhaps this is holding her from playing more often. Still, class is class."
