marshalllead.jpgThe 92nd Annual Marshall Chess Club Championship kicked off on Friday October 17. The 9-round swiss system tournament at the historic venue eclipsed the halfway mark with two GMs of Georgian descent tied for the lead. GM Zviad Izoria and GM Giorgi Kacheishvili are on 4.5/5, conceding draws only to each other. Update: Izoria and Kacheishvili share championship with 7.5/9. Look for full story by Evan Rosenberg later this week.

Kacheishvili's win over IM Bonin ended abruptly with the double attack 29.Be3!, threatening h6 and Qc5.

Izoria won his fifth round game against IM Sarkar, when a minor material disadvantage proved to be no match to Izoria's perfectly placed pieces.

IM Renato Naranja is in sole possession of second with 4/5, including a rollercoaster victory over IM Alex Lenderman.

The final four rounds will be played this coming weekend, October 24 and 25. See round six pairings , and check the Marshall chess club webpage for standings and pairings throughout the event as well as more games. Also look for a final report next week from NM Evan Rosenberg, author of the popular story on Breaking 2200.
