On Ostrovskiy's composed problem, moving the White King to d7 and the White Rook to h7 eliminates the dual solution of 1 Kc7, but not the short mate after 1 Qd1 e or cxd1 2 Rxh6 and 3 Ra6#.

A really nice article! The paragraphs about each individual student offered a great touch to the story. However, I was a bit puzzled to learn that San Francisco is now a suburb of Chicago. Yes, the January session was at Mechanics.

I agree with element, Elizabeth .... every article you write is just a tremendous piece of work, and this one is no exception. :D It was great seeing your name on the byline after what seems to me a long absence. If I was green with envy over Jennifer getting to see everyone at the World Open (and vice versa  ), I'm just as envious of these lucky kids getting to spend a week training with such super nice, talented people as you, Greg Shahade and Gregory Kaidanov. If you happen to see this comment, Greg or Mr. Kaidanov, thanks so much for all you give to chess--it's very much appreciated!! :D

Very Good article! The young Lady always does a good job.
And a special Thank You to Mr. Shahade, and Mr. Roberts. To influence and encourage young minds, is an investment never wasted.

Elizabeth,

Fantastic article highlighting what a chess school camp does and how one improves play. Wonderful to see there are so many young people with great chess futures. Thanks for the article. :D

Jennifer,

 Between the 9 Queens, this new not-for-prefit established by your brother Greg, the national Chess Trust administered by the USCF, and the Marshall Chess Club Trust, + others that are less well known, I believe it is time for an article on either CLO or Chess Life (or both) that describes and shows donation info of chess-related not-for-profits that chess players can and should support.

Hurrah! I finally found my pin number and can post after ... maybe a year?
Thanks for liking the article!
If I was thinking about giving money to chess, honestly, I would just write Greg Shahade a check. You know how some people just do a fantastic job always, no matter what, and some people don't?

This is probably a good reason I should not write the above mentioned article.

PS Sorry if that's really rude. 9 Queens does some very interesting things in popularizing chess, and I'm sure the other programs are also great.

thx for giving us a glimpse of what the camp was like and for allowing us to see some of GM Kaidanov's chess instruction.

The number of 0's in the salary of the ED is also useful information.
