Fabiano Caruana Earns 3rd GM Norm

Fabiano Caruana just earned his third GM norm in July's first Saturday tournament in Budapest (July 7-15). Fabiano has dual American-Italian citizenship and a FIDE rating of 2549. At 14 years old, he is set to beat Hikaru Nakamura's record as the youngest American GM ever!
Krush and Rohonyan Lead Women's

After six rounds of the Frank Berry U.S. Women's Championship (July 16-20, Stillwater, OK), Katerina Rohonoyan and Irina Krush are tied for first with 4.5/6. Krush defeated yesterday's leader, "Baagi", while Katerina pulled an upset against defending champion Anna Zatonskih.

Erenburg Wins New Jersey Futurity

Sergey Erenburg, an Israeli GM currently attending UMBC, won clear first in the New Jersey Futurity International (Parsippany, July 7-11) with 6.5/9. Meanwhile, Cadet champion Evan Ju and FM Tom Bartell had fantastic results but narrowly missed IM norms.

The coincidentally similar lives of two 4th grade chess champions named Fernando captured the attention of CBS news. Fernando Spada and Fernando Mendez live in Brownsville, Texas, home of University of Texas at Bronsville, which has already offered chess scholarships to both Fernandos! Watch the clip!

Nine-Way Tie at the World Open

The World Open (June 28-July 4 King of Prussia,PA) wrapped up on a rainy Independence Day in a nine-way tie for first which included GMs Nakamura,Sandipan, Yudasin, Najer, Shabalov, Stripunsky, Mikhalevski, Akobian and Becerra.

Varuzhan Akobian won the title against Alexander Stripunsky in a Armageddon playoff.

Onischuk's Homecoming Tourney

The Aerosvit Foros Super GM tournament (June 18-June 29 Crimea, Ukraine) was a challenge and a homecoming for Baltimore based GM Alexander Onischuk. He entered as the lowest rated player but came in third with 6/11, good for a prize over $10,000. Born and raised in Crimea, Alex reunited with his family at his childhood home nearby. The Ukrainian super-GM Vassily Ivanchuk took clear first.

Varuzhan Akobian defeated Alex Stripunsky in round five of the World Open (June 28-July 4) to take the lead away from Alex. Leonid Yudasin and Hikaru Nakamura from the three-day join "Var" at the top of the now merged crosstable with 4.5/5.
